MUSIC, MUSICA, MUSIQUE,μουσική

Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn. They teach you there’s a boundary line to music. But, man, there’s no boundary line to art.”  - Charlie “Yardbird” Parker

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace”-Jimi Hendrix

”Most of us go to our graves with our music still inside of us”-unknown

“Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. Music is the electrical

soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents.-Ludwig Von Beethoven

If the essence of you was an album, what would your cover look like?  That’s what DyVrse discovered at this meeting.  We made album covers describing us.  Come by the library and check some of them out, they’re pretty awesome!!

Games That Help Others

This week we took some time and played on freerice.com, an awesome website where you pick a catagory-answer questions-and earn rice for needy people.  How cool is that.  The ultimate in food and fun! We even talked about having a tournament where teams play, earn rice for the needy and the winner earns themselves a sweet prize.  Let us know what you think.

Happy New Year!!

It’s 2009 and DyVrse is off to a great start.  This past Thursday we celebrated Chinese New Year.  It’s the year of the Ox and those born under the Ox’s sign are said to be stable, fearless, obstinate, hard working and well-respected. Oh, and friendly!  We feasted on Chinese noodles (symbolizing longevity) then made some candy sushi for dessert.  We also made yei-see which are small red envelopes that you place a penny in and give it to someone else so that they will have prosperity for the new year.  It was AWESOME!!!  Devon picked our next book, Alanna by Tamora Pierce.  See you next week!!

Teen Teachers…

Last Thursday we had another computer class for seniors and once again it was a success! The adults left feeling satisfied at their progress and the teens left with the knowledge that they taught their elders and helped someone out. Our next meeting is going to be next Saturday instead of Thursday. We’re going to continue our aid to the community and team up with the children’s department to put on “Santa’s Workshop”. This event will get little and big kids the chance to make a little homemade something for a family member or friend. We’ll be making anything from woven scarves to felt change holders. Join in for food, fun, and friends (and making check someone off your Christmas Presents List!). Hope to see you there. :)

Books for WHAT??

DyVrse is planning on doing some interesting things with some old/damaged books this winter. After much thought and consideration, we’ve decided to experiment with altered books making scrapbooks, art books, lampshades, and even book purses. It’s raining book pages but it’s fun! This week and last week’s meetings have been art related. We’re getting ready for Santa’s Workshops, which we’re participating in with the children’s program. Bring your family and friends for a fun-filled day! And for those focusing on our book topics (not the recycled books!) our current read is “Gallows Hill” by Lois Duncan. Hope you have a great week and we’ll see you at the next meeting!

The Big Bad Wolf Unleashed…

The Big Bad Wolf… he’s not vicious just misunderstood. Or so it was portrayed in the skit DyVrse members did for the Prime Time program. Last Thursday three of our members drove over to the regional library to put on a skit for several Hispanic families in a program called Prime Time. The skit went well with Little Red Riding Hood, the librarian interviewer, and the Big Bad Wolf who was dressed in a pink nightgown, fluffy pink slippers, a wolf mask, and a shower cap. Thanks again Kelvin for your brave deeds. The skit went well and our members came back to DyVrse Headquarters to find a Halloween Party in full motion. Everyone left happy and full of junk food. And on that note, I’m pleased to release the next book of our DyVrse meeting… “Gallows Hill” by Lois Duncan. In the spirit of Halloween, this book is sure to bring a shiver to anyone’s spine. Don’t miss this supernatural thriller about a high school girl who’s present is looking alot like the past.

Afraid of Things That Go Bump in the Night?…

DyVrse members aren’t! Actually, we thought “The Lost Boys” (our feature presentation at this meeting) was hilarious. Special effects in the ’80s, there’s nothing like it! Other than watch this movie with MASSIVE bite, we chowed down on pizza, homemade brownies (thanks, haley!), and any other kind of junk food we could get our hands on! It was an exciting evening filled with laughs and groans. Everyone had a great time. But back to business, next Thursday during our regular meeting time, three of our members are going to go on a field trip of sorts to the Hispanic families’ PrimeTime for a reeactment of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. Wish us luck! The rest of the team will eat and chat about the next book topic, “The Uglies”.

DyVrse Teaches…

“A Computer Addict’s Nightmare”

For those of you not caught up in the DyVrse scene, last night from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. members of DyVrse spent their time teaching seniors how to set up email accounts, search things up on Google, or simply play games on their computers at home. Everyone had a great time and the students learned alot. There was even talk about having a monthly class… I don’t know, you’ll just have to tune in. :) Anyway, the fun continues… Next Thursday we’ll be enjoying a movie with bite! So come and join us. Free food and a good movie. Hope to see you all there!

A Culinary Hit!!

Congradulations to Kelvin, the winner of this week’s food contest! We had a great spread of dishes from around the globe. There was homemade cheesecake, chicken parmesan, 7 layer dip, and even squid and octopus! Everyone tasted and tested to see who had the best dish. The winner received a cookbook and is going to have his picture posted on the upcoming YA bookmarks. Bravo, Kelvin! Next week, we’re going to volunteer our time and technical skills to the seniors of our community. We’ll be setting up email accounts, surfing the internet, and answering general questions about the World Wide Web. Everyone’s welcome to come and volunteer and seniors are welcome to sign up or show up as a walk-in! Also, we’re still focusing on “The Plain Janes” so get caught up on your reading and join in on the discussion!

Get Well Soon…

This week’s meeting was pretty mellow. One of our group members is going in for surgery so we made get well soon cards for her. Hope they work! On a more professional note, do we have any cooks out there?? I hope so because there’s a cooking contest coming up on October 9th, and I’m hoping for a great turn out (I’m hungry!). There’ll be prizes for the best dish and fun for everyone so come on up to the TTCPL (Tifton-Tift County Public Library) and join in! Everyone’s welcome. Also, the book topic of the week… *drumroll please*… “The Plain Janes” by Cecil Castellucci. Not only is this book a graphic novel but it’s also about the horrors of high school in picture form! Forget trying to read the characters’ expressions… now you can actually SEE them! Double bonus! Don’t miss out on reading this book, check and see if your local library has a copy!
